Will you be attending Iowa Wesleyan this year and are looking for a faith community to join? Come visit us at St. Alphonsus or look for us on campus. St Alphonsus is located a little less than a mile south of campus on Jackson Street, across from the hospital. We will be at Freshman Move-In day on August 20th and Community Organization Day on August 31st. We plan to visit campus every week for lunch on Tuesdays this Fall. You can also find our pastor, Father Paul Connolly, at many IWU sporting events.
We offer daily Mass Tuesday-Friday and three weekend Masses.
Our parish is known in the Diocese for its choir. The choir has been on a break during the pandemic but we are planning to re-start the choir this Fall. We are also looking for cantors to lead song at Mass and musicians to help celebrate Mass.
We provide opportunities to explore the Catholic faith through events and programs like bible study, diocese events, group studies, and RCIA. RCIA is the process that people go through to learn more about the Catholic faith and to discern whether they would like to come fully into the Church. We will have the first inquiry meeting on August 26th at 7pm at church. This is an opportunity to ask some questions, there is no commitment by attending.
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: For those who like to share their faith, we will be needing volunteers to help with our faith formation programs- as catechists, small group leaders, and babysitters.
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: There are also parish/community activities like our food stall at the Old Threshers Reunion and our annual Autumn Festival Auction and Dinner.
If you are one of our home-grown college-age young adults who are leaving town to go to school, work a job, or join the military- know that you are always in our prayers. We want to make sure we stay in touch with you. Send your name, mailing address, cell # and email to Kelley at email@example.com.
We hope that if you feel comfortable with attending Public Mass, you will join us for Mass (Saturday at 5:30, Sunday at 8 & 11am, Tuesday-Friday at noon with Adoration following the Friday noon Mass). We are following diocese guidelines to provide as safe a space as possible- masks are recommended and we are sitting every other pew to remain distanced. If you are not comfortable with the public gathering of Mass, you can find our Masses on our YouTube channel: St. Al's MP Livestream. If you are not Catholic, but are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith, please contact Kelley Tansey at firstname.lastname@example.org. The process of learning more about the faith and possibly join the Church is often called RCIA (Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults) or OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults). There is no official "start" date for the process so you can start it at any time. We are planning to hold an inquiry meeting August 26th at 7pm for anyone who wants to learn more about this process. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Kelley and we will figure out a way to meet that will work for you and comply with COVID safety precautions.
If you are a Catholic and are interested in sharing your faith with others, we are looking for volunteers in the faith formation program. We need volunteers to work with families and/or teens. We especially are in need of volunteers who are bilingual to help us work with families who speak little or no English. The most common languages in our parish after English are Spanish and Vietnamese.
One way to meet other parishioners in the community is to volunteer to help serve at Mass. If you are going to physically attend Mass at St. Alphonsus, please consider helping. What are the areas we need help?
TECH TEAM- we are looking for volunteers to help live stream Mass at 5:30pm on Saturday. We are looking for teams of two for each Mass. If you are interested in getting trained, contact Kelley Tansey (email@example.com) to set up a time.
Eucharistic Minister (must be a Confirmed Catholic)
Usher/Greeter - welcome everyone and assist in guiding them through seating and receiving communion
Lector- Read at Mass and make announcements
Cantor/piano/organ- We are currently allowed to have a cantor at Mass and the congregation can sing along. We are planning to restart the choir this fall. We are also looking for people to play piano or organ at Mass. Contact Carmen Heaton at the parish if you would like to share your musical gifts.
